When Tom and Susan Lucas joined the Texas Exes as joint Life Members recently, they were simply accomplishing something they’d always talked about doing.
“We’d been going to the games and always wondered what went down in the Alumni Center,” says Tom, BBA ’83, Life Member. “Now that our three sons are married and gone, it just seemed like the right time.”
Little did they know how perfect their timing was. Texas Exes was running a “Get on the Field” promotion, where anyone who joined as a Life Member before Oct. 15 was entered in a drawing to win four tickets and field access to the UT-Kansas game, plus a $250 stipend. Tom, a lifelong sports fan and proud Texas Ex, was randomly selected as the winner.
“UT is such a well-known institution—not just athletically but academically,” he says. “Now we’ve got time to become more involved with it.”
After joining the Army in 1976, Tom returned to UT to get his degree in business management in 1983. Susan, BBA ’79, Life Member, had finished her degree in accounting four years prior. Since graduating, the couple has maintained their ties to UT mostly through Longhorn sports—as well as one son who followed his parents’ footsteps to the Forty Acres.
“Our two younger sons went to OSU, and we figured that was okay,” Tom jokes. “They still wear orange, and they still hate OU!”
The Lucases bought UT football season tickets after their sons finished up athletics at OSU three years ago. They were looking forward to getting to see the game from a whole new perspective: from the sidelines of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, the best seat in the house. But, most of all, Tom said he was looking forward to just one thing.
“Another win!” he says.
